Why Does Your Office Chair Won’t Stay Up?

It’s actually a fairly common issue faced by the office chair owners. And the reason for that is quite simple. This issue takes place when the cylinder of the chair loses its lift

How does the office chair cylinder work? The cylinder of your office chair has nitrogen gas in it. When you pull the lever up and down the gas switches chambers inside the cylinder that causes it to move up or down.

Your office chair sinks down automatically when this mechanism gets disrupted. That typically happens due to the age of the office chair.

How to Replace an Office Chair Gas Cylinder?

If your chair no longer adjusts up and down properly and it slowly sinks throughout the day, chances are your gas cylinder needs to be replaced. Fortunately for you the process is quite simple.

All you need is a few simple tools including a rubber mallet, a pipe wrench or a vice grip, and a new cylinder. Contact the customer service of your office chair manufacturer in order to get a new cylinder.

Next follow the following steps to replace your office chair cylinder:

  1. You’re gonna have to remove the old cylinder from the base and the mechanism.
  2. First, turn the chair over on its side. Then take the rubber mallet to tap the center of the base away from the chair.
  3. Tightly secure your pipe wrench near the top of the cylinder and twist until it releases from the mechanism.
  4. If you don’t have a pipe wrench, remove the mechanism from the chair by unscrewing the main bolts at the bottom of the seat.
  5. Next, gently tap the mechanism off the cylinder using your rubber mallet.
  6. If you’re having trouble removing the cylinder from an older chair, then apply some WD-40 on it.
  7. Now that you’ve successfully removed the old cylinder from your chair, take your new cylinder and insert its bottom at the base.
  8. Then carefully lift both into the mechanism.  And now you’re finished. Flip the chair over and take a seat. The parts will  fasten together on their own.

How to Fix a Sinking Office Chair?

In this section, we will go through two of the most widely adopted methods for fixing a sinking desk chair. We will guide you through these methods each step of the way.

The PVC Pipe Method

Here are the steps you need to follow to stop your chair from sinking using the PVC pipe method:

  1. First, you need to measure the length of the cylinder of your chair. Take a roller and measure the diameter of the cylinder. Then take the measurement of the total length of the cylinder when it’s in the ideal position.
  2. Next, you have to get a PVC pipe that will fit over the chair’s pneumatic cylinder. This pipe needs to be slightly larger in diameter than the chair’s cylinder.
  3. After that you have to cut the pipe at a height that will enable you to hold the chair’s cylinder in position.
  4. Take a hacksaw and secure the pipe using a vise. Then proceed to saw through the pipe at the specific height that you had determined in the previous step.
  5. Make sure you wear gloves, and mask/respirator while sawing through the pipe for safety purposes.
  6. After cutting through the pipe, make a slit on one of its sides. This slit will enable you to attach it onto the chair’s cylinder.
  7. Push the seat’s position to be higher and snap the pipe onto the cylinder of the chair. You can easily do this by pushing the slit of the pipe against the cylinder.
  8. If you feel that the chair’s height is still lower than it should be, you should cut more PVC pipe pieces in the same fashion and snap them on the cylinder.

The Hose Clamp Method

You can also resolve this issue using a hose clamp. Just follow the steps given below and you should be good to go:

  1. Most of the office chairs come with a plastic skit tube that’s placed over the expandable cylinder. You need to slide it in either direction to reveal the metal cylinder underneath.
  2. Now, set your office chair to your preferred height. But, remember that you won’t be able to further adjust the height from this point onwards. So, make sure the chair is at the perfect height.
  3. Take a hose clamp and wrap it around the chair’s cylinder. You should get a 2 cm hose clamp for this task. Don’t tighten the clamp just yet.
  4. You should remember the fact that the clamp has to be tightly attached to the cylinder. Otherwise, it won’t be able to hold the chair in place. You can provide a better surface grip to the clamp by wrapping a couple of layers of duct tape over the cylinder.
  5. Now it’s time for you to tighten the clamp as much as you possibly can. You need to slide your hose clamp at the topmost part of the cylinder. Then fasten it as much as possible by rotating its screw.
  6. Ideally, the chair should now be unable to sink down when you sit on it because of the hose clamp.
