Which Chair is Best for Posture? 3 Steps to Correct Posture

Prolonged and static sitting on a traditional chair is a risk factor for our sedentary life. Those who have desk jobs spend all day sitting in front of a desk might end up having horrible posture. I used to sit in front of my computer all day and developed back pain issues which I suffered for almost two years.

After correcting my sitting posture, slowly, I got rid of the back pain issue. Currently, I don’t have any back pain. Suppose you are practicing bad posture for a long time. In that case, you are likely to develop postural problems, for example, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, etc.

The ergonomic office chair is the best chair for posture. It enhances posture stability by supporting the lumbar spine, shoulder, and neck. As an ergonomic chair is designed to follow our back curvature; so, It keeps the natural “S” curve of our back intact, supporting the back muscle.

We can improve our sitting posture by using the ergonomic chair and correcting our sitting posture. A combination of both can help us enhance our back. Every person sits in their own way; if we sit in the wrong posture, we are more likely to develop back issues. So, it’s essential to correct seating posture, and an ergonomic chair can help us do that.

In this article, I will explain why an ergonomic chair is the best option for posture. Do you have any other option rather than using an ergonomic chair? Also, I will explain what research suggests to correct our posture.

Why is an Ergonomic Chair the Best Option for Posture?

According to the Department of Hygiene and Ergonomic research, an office chair should have a high backrest with a reclining option between 110-130 degrees to achieve a good posture from sitting.

They also suggest having a backrest that should be slightly concave at the top and distinctly convex in the lumbar region, just like the curvature of our natural posture. This type of design will support the lumbar region while sitting and allow relaxation of the back when reclining.

An ergonomic chair or a dynamic chair is designed to support our posture’s natural “S” curve. When we stand up, we will notice that curve more easily, and when we sit in a chair that becomes an issue to keep that natural curve due to poor chair design. We ended up being slouching.

Ergonomic Chair Follows the natural “S” curve of our posture

Traditional chair design with no lumbar support and ergonomic adjustability we end up developing issues if we use it regularly.

Modern ergonomic office chairs feature a synchro-tilt mechanism that allows for movements of the seat pan and the backrest in a fixed ratio or independently.

I found this mechanism to be the best reclining mechanism technique. This mechanism can reduce back discomfort during prolonged sitting if you change your posture quite often.

Even several studies have referred to this mechanism as one aspect in the prevention of low back pain. So, manufacturers of office chairs have implemented this mechanism in many of their chairs. I will add some of the chairs with this mechanism in this article. You can check them out.

Do You have Any Other Option Rather than Using an Ergonomic Chair?

There are a bunch of other sitting options rather than using an ergonomic chair. When I researched this topic online, I found that the saddle chair is another option that can enhance your posture.

However, I wasn’t convinced due to the design of this chair. Then I found a study from Prince of Wales Hospital that talks about the saddle and standard office chairs.

According to this article, the saddle seat reduces discomfort in the lower back; however, it increases discomfort in the hips and the glutes. Due to the unique design of the saddle seat, it promotes a tremendous trunk-to-thigh angle, which is considered optimum sitting posture.

However, based on the test that this study conducted, it is impossible to recommend a saddle seat over a standard office chair.

So, I would say a standard ergonomic office chair is the best option to achieve optimum sitting posture while working for long hours.

Correct Your Sitting Posture

If you don’t correct your sitting posture, having a great ergonomic chair won’t benefit you. Our modern sedentary life makes us sit all day long for work, entertainment even in our leisure time. Sitting has become our habit. According to statistics, we all have back issues at some point in our life.

Although there is no apparent epidemiological evidence for a relationship between sitting and low back pain. However, prolonged sitting has been associated with an increased risk.

To get rid of the back problems, a chair, and sitting posture design have become important issue.

Here is How to Correctly Sit on An Ergonomic Office Chair: 3 Easy Steps

  • Step 1: Adjust the height of the chair to fit you correctly. Ensure your feet are flat on the floor, and there will be about a 90-degree angle between the thigh and leg. If you feel discomfort, you can put your feet on a footrest.
  • Step 2: When you are sitting on a chair, you need to make sure your lumbar region is touching the back of your chair. If your chair has adjustable lumbar support, then adjust the lumbar to fit you correctly.
  • Step 3: Put your elbows to the armrests without your shoulders being hunched.

This sitting posture works for me. As I mentioned, I had back pain, and this correct posture helped me a lot. Try to maintain the proper posture as much as possible.

We tend to change our posture when we feel discomfort. We try to sit cross-legged on a chair or try to sit in another way. I would suggest that you do not do that. When you feel discomfort take a small break, try walking in your workplace, and then get back to work.
