A good office chair is a must for people who have desk jobs. An average American spends six to seven hours sitting every day. So, it is crucial for people like me who have desk jobs to get a good office chair to work comfortably without any issues.
Sitting at a desk all day leads to various physical issues. If you sit all day on a bad chair, these issues will increase exponentially. That’s why getting a good office chair is very much important, especially for people who spend long hours sitting at their desks.
To identify a good office chair and to distinguish between a good and bad chair, there are some signs of a good chair that you must keep in your mind when you’re looking for a new office chair.
In this article, I will talk about those signs which will help you to identify and choose a good office chair for yourself.
There are a lot of signs of a good office chair. The most important signs of a good office chair are as follows:
- A Good Office Chair must be Stable and Sturdy
- Has most of the Ergonomic Features
- Provides great Lumbar support
- The Seat Height is Adjustable
- Extended Warranty Period
- Contains Enough Padding
- Have Adjustable Arms
- Wheels are Smooth
With my years of experience, I have seen that every good office chair possesses the above-mentioned signs. As I have noted earlier, it is crucial for anyone to know about the signs of a good office chair for choosing the right office chair. Also, to distinguish between the good and bad chairs, knowing about these signs can be helpful.
Keeping that in mind, let’s discuss the signs of a good office chair in detail.
Signs of a Good Office Chair:
The signs of a good office chair are discussed below:
A Good Office Chair must be Stable and Sturdy:
This is the most basic and primary sign of a good office chair. If the chair is not stable, you will never find comfort while sitting on it. It doesn’t matter how featureful or expensive your chair is. If it is not stable, it’s not worth it.
Unstable office chairs cause lots of discomforts and always pull your attention from your work. Thus it can also reduce your productivity while working at a desk.
So, when you are looking for a good chair, sit on it and see if it is stable enough. Then look for other things.
Has Most of the Ergonomic Features:
There are many ergonomic features that an office chair must-have. It is not mandatory to have all of them, but there are a few features that you must look into, such as adjustable seat height, armrests, proper lumbar support, 360-degree swivel, headrests, etc.
Among these features, the seat height adjustment, swivel features & proper lumbar support has the most ergonomic values. So a good office chair must have these features.
Also, there are other optional features like headrests and all that; look into those as well if you have any particular need. Look for those features if you personally prefer them.
But you should always keep that in mind that a good office chair must have essential ergonomic features.
Provides great Lumbar Support:
Lumbar support is one of the essential ergonomic features out there. We already talked about it in the last point but since it is very much necessary to have, let’s talk in detail.
Actually, having good lumbar support helps you to sit with proper posture, and it also minimizes the chances of developing back pain through prolonged sitting periods.
So, if you have a desk job like me, and you spend a lot of time sitting on your office chair, then for you to have good lumbar support is a must. That is why providing great lumbar support is a sign that an office chair is good for you.
The Seat Height is Adjustable:
Having seat height adjustment is another sign of a good office chair. It is very much important to set our office chair according to your height and also the height of your desk.
Looking into the screen of your computer from a bad angle can be harmful to the muscles of your neck. If the height of an office chair is not optimal for you, then it can lead to this issue.
If you can adjust the seat height of your office chair, then you can adjust it to your comfort level, and this will save you from various issues in the long run.
Extended Warranty Period:
We can say that the more durable an office chair is, the better it is for us. It is also evident that office chairs with longer warranty periods tend to last longer.
I have talked about it in detail in another article, which is on the lifespan of office chairs. You can check it out by clicking here.
My point is that you can identify if an office chair is good or not by looking at the warranty period of it.
You might have heard about the legendary office chairs of Herman Miller, Steelcase; they all have a huge warranty period.
That being said, an extended warranty period is a sign of a good office chair as it represents that the chair is going to last longer in general.
Contains Enough Padding:
Lack of proper padding on places like the backrest, arms, and seat can make an office chair feel stiff and uncomfortable to sit for long hours. That’s why it is essential for office chairs to have enough padding so that it feels soft to sit. Thus you will be able to sit comfortably for prolonged sitting sessions.
That’s why every good office chair must have enough padding, and we can say, having enough padding in proper places is a sign of a good office chair.
Have Adjustable Armrests:
Having adjustable armrests is a sign of a good office chair. Armrests are very much important for sitting comfortably on your office chair for long hours.
When we sit for long hours at work at our desks for long hours, our elbow muscles get tired, and we can experience muscle fatigues. Having a surface to rest your arms works like a charm to remove this problem.
The armrests work as the surface on which you can rest your arms and sit comfortably. Besides, if the arms are adjustable, then the comfortability even increases manifold. Most office chairs are made for the average person.
If you are a short or tall person then, you might need to adjust the armrests to a proper height or angle. For this reason, I think having adjustable armrests is a sign of a good office chair.
Casters are Smooth:
Caster wheels combined with a 360 swivel feature is a great feature to have. This feature makes life really easier for me. It will help you to pick up nearby things, and you don’t have to stand up every time you require to move.
But if the caster wheels do not move smoothly, it really feels irritating, and it also puts pressure on leg muscle if the wheels do not move properly. That’s why having smooth caster wheels is also considered a great sign for determining a good office chair.
There you have it! I have mentioned all the signs that I look for in a good office chair. There are other signs that I have ignored, and I have only mentioned the major one.
But there is a matter of concern that I want to share. If you have made it this far, you must have noticed that I have emphasized more on ergonomic features.
However, it is a matter of the fact that most people are not concerned about office chair ergonomics. I have read a research journal done on 100 dutch subjects who have desk jobs.
The research says 61% of the subjects never use the adjustable ergonomic features, or in simple language, they never adjust their chairs. This really concerns me as people are not concerned about office chair ergonomics, and that’s why many people experience several physical issues in the long run, just because of sitting for long hours.
That’s all from me. I hope you found this article helpful and I think these signs will help you to choose the right office chair for you and your family. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
